Why flash it rather than using KIES for official update?
One thing I realized : Original firmware is not to my liking, lag and slow. I want my phone to be fast!
I have been doing this for a few friends and a few others via email. I think it will be more beneficial for me to post it up as a reference to all. (Some friends willing to travel 300km to meet me for this).
Kudos to Justin Tan (Photog and LancerGT brother) who train me about ODIN over MSN...
-------------------------------------------
Let's start with tools you need:
- Windows PC/Notebook (For Odin)
- Your SGS (Samsung Galaxy S) cable
- Odin 1.3 (and above) - This is your flashing tool
- A firmware of your choice (For this I use : Froyo 2.2.1 JPY)
Resource links and guides after the jump
JPY Firmware : http://www.multiupload.com/UHJNT0K1F2
RAR Password : samfirmware.com
Odin 1.3 : http://www.multiupload.com/4JLU4QHUV7
Warning : Backup all your data. It WILL be erased from the phone
Steps :
1) Factory reset phone (Another way is to dial this in your phone dial pad *2767*3855#)
2) After it is done and fresh, turn off the phone
3) Volumn Down + Home + Power button
4) Phone will boot up in Yellow "Download" Icon
5) Startup ODIN on PC
6) Plug in Cable
7) PC will show COM:### <- Port Number
8) Click PDA and select the JPY_JPY_JPY.tar
9) make sure Re-Partition is NOT selected
10) Click START
11) Don't touch the phone. It will run and reboot.
12) Once rebooted you are DONE.
(Note that the first time boot up will be 3-5 times longer, only for the first time)
To confirm, you can go to : Settings > about phone and see it under Firmware version "2.2.1" and Baseband version "I9000XXJPY" and build number.
Good sharing bro! Keep it comin' :)
