JL's must have Top10 Apps & Top5 Games on Android

Having the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy Tab and a few other test Android phones... And constantly having to reflash and reinstall the firmware, I get to install and try all kinds of weird configuration and apps on the devices. After more than 10 times doing it, there are 10 apps and 5 games that I MUST HAVE on every fresh device...

The complete list after the jump...
Top 10 Apps

  • 3G Watchdog
    • A background running app that tracks your mobile data usage on the android device. It is my1st app I download from android market on a fresh device. It helps me make sure that I do not exceed my limit every month (500MB) Maxis plan. However, it is clever enough to not monitor my wifi usage when I hook on the Yes Huddle for 4G connectivity.
  • Facebook
    • World's largest Social networking site! It is one of the reason why I choose to get and Android phone. This facebook app also syncs contacts and profile pictures to the phone, show their status messages when making/receiving calls (on some devices) and having the menu option to share to facebook when you select a picture, video, link or even typed some text.
  • Whatsapp
    • SMS for free! Whatsapp is somewhat like MSN or any other chat client. However, it logs in using your phone number and search your phonebook for friends who were already on the network. You can then text them, send pictures, video, sound clip, your location or a contact via mobile data network. Why pay RM 0.20 for an sms on your normal network when you can send them for a fraction of a cent here.
  • OfficeSuite
    • This is the usual office app to view and create Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. It also allows you to connect to your Google Docs directly to view and make changes online. It's a must have for me to have my documents in the cloud and easily share them across for work and personal. (My recent Singapore trip planning together with 3 other friends were done on Google Doc)
  • Opera Mobile
    • The native android browser is quite good. Opera Mobile is my 2nd choice for another browser. It is fast, having my favorite pages in the quick dial pad is very snappy.
  • Bible
    • This version by Lifechurch.tv has all the version you want. It is customizable for different preferences, font size, page colors. And the new BETA version with the help of high speed internet, even reads the pages for you with natural human voice (Not those robotic sound generated ones). Good to have God's word with me all the time for a quick reference or motivation.
  • PicSay
    • A simple to use yet quite powerful image editing tool. Easily sharpen, adjust brightness or crop the image taken on the device camera before posting it to Facebook. Or be more creative by adding effects, text and some graphics to the pictures too.
  • YouTube
    • Less significant when I am on my phone carrier's mobile data. But on wifi or Yes 4G, it's fun and I don't have to wait for buffering time. Catch up on latest movie trailers or some funny clips never been so fun and mobile.
  • Tunein Radio
    • Online radio app that reads your location and show you all online radio channels starting from those around you. Fancy some BFM or RedFM? Or some 24hour online radio such as 181.fm? These are my favorite channels to tune to. I can even set it to sleep after 25mins so that I can just leave it on before I sleep.
  • Zedge
    • An app to search for thousands of wallpapers and ringtones. As I love to customize my phone and at times, change a wallpaper every week... This is one of the fastest way I can easily search for the right ones and with 1 click, apply to my devices.
Top 5 Games

  • Slice It
    • A fun game to slice things up. It is not as simple when it comes to odd shapes and higher levels. It requires some mathematical skills. Which I think, playing this game will help keep my maths side of the brain healthy...
  • Tank Hero
    • It is somewhat like the Nintendo Wii version and the old time Battle City which was a big hit back in the 80s. It's fun and playable so the same levels can be played again and again
  • Angry Birds
    • Available in all major devices now. PC, iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android Phones, Android Tablets... It has some real physics going on in there. Which I hope will keep my physics side of my brain healthy by playing this more... (What an excuse)
  • Paper Toss
    • A super simple yet addictive game. Especially when you have friends who have higher scores than you. Objective is simple, throw the paper into the basket. The catch is, there is always a fan with a different velocity trying to blow your paper away at every stage.
  • Air Control
    • If you always wanted to be a pilot or an air control manager, you can do that here. Multitasking skill is highly required. Managing between Jumbo Jets, Cargo planes, small planes and helicopters and guide them to their respective landing strips. Sounds simple enough, wait till you hit over a hundred points... I still wonder how the Koreans hold the world record of landing >10,000 planes in this game...
That's it.. my list of Top10 and Top5... Will relook into this list when I get my Honeycomb (Android3.0)
